Flyers Defeat Vianney in PK Shootout

The pulse of Flyers fans was palpable on Monday night as the varsity soccer hosted the Griffins of St. John Vianney. A lack of stadium seats was immaterial as the crowd was on their feet for over 100 minutes of hard-nosed and emotional play. A goal by Vianney, midway through the first half, gave the momentum to the opponent, but the rest of the game belonged to Lindbergh. Flyers defense, backed by aggressive goalkeeping from senior Chris Eason, kept Lindbergh in the game until a deftly placed shot on goal by Cody Higgs in the second half tested the Griffins' keeper. After giving up the rebound, it was sophomore Bagaric who knotted the score at 1 each. The fortitude of the Flyers was pitted against the grit of the Griffins as double overtime could not yield a win, resulting in penalty kicks. Snipers from both teams convened on the center of the pitch and one by one, shots were delivered, testing both keepers. The game winning penalty shot rested on the shoulders of Junior Nick Whistler. With one well-placed shot, a cacophony of fanatical cheering announced a victory and perhaps, a new page in Flyers' soccer.
